March 9, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Leonard “Len” Kornfeld of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the age of 91 years.
He was born in Verwood, SK, to Werner and Martha, the oldest of four boys. He grew up on their small farm during the Great Depression and attended a one-room country school.
He attended Luther College for two years, before leaving to work in the oilfields with his brother. He later moved to Calgary to lease a service station and eventually earned his Diesel Mechanic ticket while working for various other stations. During this time, he married his hometown sweetheart, Betty, who was an RN at Alberta Children’s Hospital. Len ended up working with Calgary City Transit for 32 years; moving his way up to management as a Purchaser. He enjoyed retirement for the following 30 years.
He had a zest for life and loved visiting with friends and family, watching curling matches, and cheering on his children and grandchildren at sporting events and music recitals. He also enjoyed quality time with his great-grandchildren, who happily hopped into his lap for stories or tea parties. Len was an avid camper and initiated a legacy of family vacations at his favourite campground in Radium, BC.
He will be dearly missed by his three children, Gord (Jo-Ann), Joyce, and Audrey (Paul); his five grandchildren, Jenny (Jon), Paul (Laura), Ben (Ashley), Heather (Marcello), and Kyle; as well as honorary granddaughter (Glory), and six precious great-grandchildren.
Len was predeceased by his brother Norman in 2002, his son-in-law John in 2018, his loving wife of 62 years, Betty, in 2019, and his grandson Brian in 2022.
